Kore-eda takes a darker more acerbic look with his keen eye for family drama in this story of a wayward father struggling to make ends meet.

A once successful novelist, Ryota (Hiroshi Abe) is now struggling to make ends meet working as a private detective and squandering his money on gambling. His father has died, his mother and his ex-wife seem to be moving on, and he barely sees his young son. When a stormy summer night turns an awkward family visit to his mother’s into an overnight stay, emotions are brought to the surface.

‘It is a story of bittersweet regrets and acceptance of life’s disappointments and impossibilities, coloured with gentle humour and observation’ The Guardian.

Part of Of Flesh and Blood: The Cinema of Hirokazu Kore-eda, a season of films and events celebrating the work of the Japanese director.
