Filmed in various places over the globe, charting various personal movements of the filmmaker, Ghost Strata explores the differing scales of impact that humanity's presence has on the earth in the past, present and into the future.
‘Ghost Strata’ refers to the missing elements from within the rock strata that despite their absence offer hints of what was once there. Ben Rivers' film is divided into the months of the year in which the footage was captured and features found sound and text that create a meditation on time, memory and extinction.
This screening will be preceded by two short travelogues from filmmaker Mark Jenkin (Bait, Enys Men) - Dear Marianne and The Road to Zennor, and a short documentary from local filmmaker Katie McFadden – The Barrel, which explores how an environment can mirror the narrative of its people through folk stories and colonial infrastructure.
This screening coincides with an exhibition in the QFT foyer of Yvette Monohan’s photo series The Thousand Year Old Boy, which presents the Burren as an ancient place, a landscape that acts as a silent witness to the lives of those who have gone before us.
Yvette Monahan and Katie McFadden will be joining us for a post-screening conversation about the relationship between geography and storytelling in their work.
Screening as part of NI Science Festival. Established in 2014, NI Science Festival has grown to become the largest celebration of its kind on the island of Ireland and in its relatively short lifespan became one of the leading Science Festivals in the whole of Europe.
