Showing: 13 August 2026
The startling 1922 silent film returns to QFT, featuring a haunting original score, composed and performed live by Nick Carlisle.
A series of eerie vignettes depict images of sorcery and evil on screen, from representations of occultism and religious hypocrisy to a chilling witch hunt in the Middle Ages. Directed by and starring Benjamin Christensen as the Devil, Häxan mixes documentary and fiction forms to create an unsettling brew that prefigures everything from Gothic horror to the found footage film.
QFT commissioned musician Nick Carlisle to create a new score for the film's 100th anniversary in 2022. Performed alone by Nick on synthesiser and Mellotron, the score received a rapturous response following its premiere performance. Since then, Nick has performed the score at venues in the UK and Ireland, including two sold out performances at the Barbican in London.
Also showing will be Nick’s folk horror-tinged video for his single "Jester Quantised", taken from his new album of songs "The Mad Decades", released this year on The Colour Inverted Records.
