The startling 1922 silent film by Benjamin Christensen returns to QFT, featuring the haunting new score commissioned by QFT in 2022, composed and performed live by Nick Carlisle.
Through a series of striking vignettes, traversing various cinematic styles (from documentary and essay film to horror and the avant-garde), Benjamin Christensen's disorienting doc/fiction hybrid charts the history of ancient sorcery and demonology, before suggesting a link between those persecuted for witchcraft and people living with neurological conditions. Formally daring and wildly inventive, even by today’s standards, a hundred and one years on and there is still nothing else quite like it.
QFT commissioned musician Nick Carlisle to create a new score for the film’s 100th anniversary in 2022. Performed alone by Nick on synthesisers ancient and modern, the score received a rapturous response following its premiere performance as part of the In Dreams Are Monsters season of horror films.
This special encore event will allow audiences to experience Häxan on the big screen once again, accompanied by a rare live performance of Nick’s remarkable new score. You can listen to Nick's album of selected highlights from the soundtrack here.
Screening as part of the Belfast International Arts Festival, which takes place throughout Belfast from 12 October to 5 November.
PLUS! Nick will perform the score at a special Halloween screening at the Ulster Folk Museum's Picture House. Tickets can be booked via the Ulster Folk Museum's website here.
