Three films from master documentarian John T. Davis, capturing the rarely seen world of the underground punk scene in Northern Ireland in all its glory.
Shellshock Rock: Raw and uncompromising, this film captures the rough aesthetic of the punk scene with much of the filming carried out in dingy bars, clubs and in Terri Hooley’s Good Vibrations record shop in Belfast. It features the music of Protex, The Undertones, Rudi, The Outcasts and Stiff Little Fingers. (1979, 50 mins)
Protex Hurrah: Davis meets Belfast band Protex on a US tour in 1980. They are captured in playful mode as they mingle with the crowds during the St. Patrick’s Day parade, and later that night they perform at New York's Hurrah Club. (1980, 15 mins)
Self-Conscious Over You: In this sequel to Shellshock Rock, Davis captures the joyful concert organised by Good Vibration Records at the Ulster Hall in April 1980, when almost 1,800 people crammed in to watch The Outcasts' incendiary performance. (1981, 40 mins)
This screening will be introduced by John T. Davis.
Rip It Up is a UK-wide season, supported by BFI National Lottery funding, exploring and celebrating the changing face of youth rebellion, culture and expression on screen in the UK.
