The Principal Enemy is an influential yet rarely-screened example of Latin America’s socially engaged Third Cinema movement. Chosen by our LUMI Programmers.
A peasant farmer is brutally murdered in the remote Peruvian Sierra. A passing guerilla group and the local peasant community seek to enact their own revenge against the perpetrators, the local landlord and his servant. Forming a people’s court, they pursue justice for both the murder of their friend, and the co-option of their land.
With over thirty credited directors, The Principal Enemy embodies the collectivist ideals of Latin America’s “Imperfect” Third Cinema. The Principal Enemy is a striking image of cinema’s politically mobilising potential.
