This powerful film by MATSUMOTO Yusaku, offers a cinematic account of the tragedy that befell KANEKO and Japan, and makes us wonder whether creators can be held culpable for how others use their work.

KANEKO (HIGASHIDE Masahiro) is a genius computer programmer and is best remembered as the creator of Winny, a peer-to-peer file-sharing programme. Released in 2002, it quickly became the software of choice for online piracy in Japan, in much the same way that Napster had in the West. But while Napster’s creators walked away free to pursue other ventures, KANEKO was arrested and put on trial for enabling copyright violations.

Despite support from his defence lawyers, KANEKO was found guilty for creating Winny in 2004. The judge’s decision caused a damaging ripple effect in the tech industry, becoming sensational, not only in Japan but worldwide.

The Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme 2024: Unforgettable: Memories, Times and Reflections in Japanese Cinema, is organised by the Japan Foundation, with Major Support from the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, with Sponsorship in Kind from SUQQU, Athletia, Clearspring and Pentel.jftfp24logos.jpg
