Ceasefire Generation: Multiculturalism and Racism Resources

24 February 2021

In 2019/20 there were 936 reported racist incidents in Northern Ireland [see survey]. We’ve put together some resources which may help anyone who has experienced any kind of racism in Northern Ireland. We’ve also highlighted some projects which focus on increasing understanding and celebrate multiculturalism in Northern Ireland.

PROJECTS

Black and Northern Irish
Following on from the success of Black and Scottish, director Stewart Kyasimire is working with Belfast producer Lindsay Duke on a new documentary on what it is like to be black and Northern Irish.

There are 18 people taking part in the documentary - a variety of people from across generations and occupations. The list includes Q Radio's Ibe Sesay, boxer Tommy McCarthy, performer Gyasi Sheppy and counsellor Calanthia Lilburn.

"The documentary is to highlight black excellence in Northern Ireland. There has never been that opportunity were people were actually put out there to tell their own story. Most of the time it is other people telling their stories.”
- Lindsay Duke, producer.

Belfast MELA
Mela is produced by ArtsEkta, a multi-award winning cultural organisation that works to develop intercultural relationships at the heart of the community and transform communities through shared creative experiences.

Bringing together communities of Belfast and beyond, they create projects that inspire audiences to engage with the diversity, tastes, rhythms and sights that make up the multicultural life of Northern Ireland.

The Blackout Show
"A lot of people posted their black square for 'blackout Tuesday' but didn't have much to say afterwards. The conversation surrounding racial injustice, prejudice and discrimination and African culture in the UK has always been so stigmatised. Time to get comfortable with being uncomfortable! We are here to continue the conversation, bringing our truths, facts and guest voices to help spread the message, black is here and we will be heard."
