This year, we’re looking at the 1980s in British filmmaking when, against the political and social upheaval of Thatcherism, the independent film community championed new filmmaking voices with the arrival of Channel 4 and maverick producers Palace Pictures.
This year’s programme also features restorations from around the world, with films from Spanish auteur Carlos Saura, Argentinian trailblazer María Luisa Bemberg, Czechoslovak New Wave director VÄ›ra Chytilová, Mauritanian director Sidney Sokhona, Prem Kapoor’s long-lost film, considered India’s first queer feature, and politically engaged films from 1960s and 1970s America. It’s a fascinating programme taking in marginalisation, transformation and liberation in all its forms. Dive in.
