A marvellous cast with remarkable chemistry provide a refreshing take on the coming-of-age genre in Shannon Murphy’s sensitively directed feature film debut Babyteeth.
When seriously ill teenager Milla (Eliza Scanlen, Little Women) falls in love with a free-spirited hustler named Moses (Toby Wallace) it’s her parent’s (Ben Mendelsohn and Essie Davis) worst nightmare. Yet, acutely aware of her diagnosis and emboldened by her new found love, Milla sets out to show everyone in her orbit, her parents included, how to step out of their comfort zone and live as if they have nothing to lose.
With a raw energy so often missing from similar films, Babyteeth follows Milla’s journey from teendom into adulthood with affection and poignancy, offering an exhilarating breath of fresh air.
“Shannon Murphy’s debut feature…treats its characters with rare respect, and a quiet warmth…[a] shrewd, affectionate drama.” – Debbie Zhou, The Guardian
