Season BFI Black Star

Join us in celebrating some of cinema’s greatest talents in Black Star, a major new season from the BFI.

Acclaimed actor Michael Rapaport goes behind the camera to document the inner workings and behind-the-scenes drama of one of the most innovative and influential hip-hop bands of all time, A Tribe Called Quest.

For 20 years, the group produced jazz-infused music that drew new audiences to hip-hop. In spite of unparalleled success, the group fractured in 1998 under dramatic constraints and tumultuous pitfalls. The silence was broken with their 2016 comeback album, ‘We Got It From Here... Thank You 4 Your Service’, completed before the death of MC Phife Dawg. Rapaport offers unprecedented insight into this seminal band in his remarkably honest and emotional portrait.
