Join us in celebrating some of cinema’s greatest talents in Black Star, a major new season from the BFI.
Our season concludes in December with a reissue of Oscar® winning classic In the Heat of the Night; an all-day celebration of hip-hop; and a season of films featuring music icons from Diana Ross to Beyoncé.
Wild Style, the first true hip-hop movie, is a thrilling snapshot of exploding creativity encompassing freestyling, scratching, breakdancing and graffiti in early 1980s New York.
An essential portrait capturing the birth of a radical new artistic culture, this music-filled 1983 docudrama follows the exploits of maverick tagger Zoro (played by the legendary New York graffiti artist Lee Quinones). Everything in Wild Style is authentic – the story, style, characters, and most of the actors, who were drawn from the community. It also features a who’s-who of old-school hip-hop pioneers, including Grandmaster Flash, Busy Bee, Lady Pink, Fab 5 Freddy, The Cold Crush Brothers and many more.
