Chosen by our LUMI programmers, we celebrate the pioneering stuntwoman Donna Hall with a screening of Calamity Jane.

More than 70 years after its initial release, our LUMI Programmers are excited to screen this classic western action musical which has gained a cult following among queer audiences for its subversion of gender norms and inclusion of the 'proto coming out anthem', Secret Love.

Deadwood, South Dakota, is largely the abode of men, but frontier scout Calamity Jane (Doris Day) is as boastful and handy with a gun as any of them. Claiming she can bring renowned singer Adelaide Adams (Gale Robbins) to perform at the local saloon, the male townsfolk call her bluff. As a result, Calamity Jane sets off on a wild adventure to Chicago, hoping to prove her worth, and to prove her doubters wrong.

Stuntwoman Donna Hall was a veteran of Hollywood, working in hundreds of westerns across a 40-year career, where she stood-in for Barbara Stanwyck, Debbie Reynolds and, of course, Doris Day. With this screening our LUMI programmers shine a light on a sadly oft-forgotten train-jumping, horse-riding, stagecoach-stealing action hero.

St Agnes' Choral Society will be performing some of the songs from their own production of Calamity Jane live in our foyer before the screening so get down early for this musical treat.

This screening will be introduced by Empire magazine editor-at-large Helen O'Hara.
