LUMI at QFT presents Robert Wiene's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, a revolutionary piece of cinema that now, one hundred years after its release, returns to QFT, showcasing its incomparable legacy and the ever iconic silhouette of Conrad Veidt's Cesare.

As the young Francis (Friedrich Fehér) recounts his experience with the mysterious Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss), this quintissential work of German expressionism veers into mystique, metaphor and murder on the winding path to one of cinemas most seminal twists. Woven through the memories of our tragic protagonist, we are pulled into the surreal scheme orchestrated by the titular doctor, and perpetrated by the murderous man slumbering within his cabinet.

Imbued with layers of meaning, this silent film casts a long shadow and stands as essential viewing for any film historian. Notable for its boundary breaking production techniques, this precursor to arthouse cinema remains a revolutionary work sketched across a surreal landscape that has inspired cinema history from Film Noir to Scorsese.

This film will be introduced by LUMI programmer Michael McConway.

"Every frame of Robert Wiene's 1920 German silent film has an influence far beyond the horror genre...this gothic masterpiece has seeped into the very soul of movie-making itself, continuing to cast its unbreakable spell - ★★★★★" - Mark Kermode, The Observer
