Inspired by La La Land, settle back and enjoy our selection of classic Hollywood musicals about stardom.
Stanley Donen’s ineffably stylish 1957 musical stars Fred Astaire as a world-famous fashion photographer who transforms a shy bookstore clerk (a supremely chic Audrey Hepburn) into a fashion model. Romance, of course, ensues. Made late in Astaire’s career, he is nonetheless as twinkle-toed as ever. In her first musical Hepburn is impressive, particularly in a dance scene set in a hipster (in the ‘50s sense) nightclub.
“What is startling here is the eye-popping colour, the self-reflexive photography and visual effects, the dance sequences (Fred Astaire with his umbrella), and the witty and ingenious use of the Paris locations.” – GEOFFREY MACNAB, INDEPENDENT
