From the award-winning director/writer/actor Elia Suleiman, It Must Be Heaven is a comedy about a man who leaves Palestine seeking an alternative homeland only to find that however far he travels, from Paris to New York, something always reminds him of home.
Fed up with his lemon-thieving neighbour and the domestic unrest at home E.S. (Suleiman, as a fictional version of himself) sets out to see the world beyond Palestine. On his journey he encounters heavily armed American shoppers, dismissive French movie producers and Mexican actor Gael García Bernal. But no matter how far E.S. travels hostility, senselessness, and discord appear, leading him to realise that maybe he isn't actually that far from where he started.
Part Charlie Chaplin, part Roy Andersson, Suleiman explores identity, nationality and belonging with a deadpan, satirical style that is full of humour and allegory. It Must Be Heaven asks "where can we truly call home?" in a way that only Suleiman can.
"As a director, Suleiman knows how to compose the frame to get the most out of each gag, and as a performer, he recognizes that his arched eyebrows are powerful tools of comedy and employs them as such." - Ben Croll, The Wrap
