The perfect film for frenetic times, Max Richter’s Sleep is a mellow, meditative and immersive documentary exploring the acclaimed composer’s celebrated 8-hour concept album.
Built around various tonal shifts that synchronize to the frequencies on which the human brain operates while a person is asleep, 2015 record ‘Sleep’ has been hailed as a genre-defying concept album that many consider to be Richter’s magnum opus. Director Natalie Johns’ film utilises personal archive and performance footage to offer fascinating insights of an ambitious performance of the celebrated album in Los Angeles by Richter and artist and BAFTA winning filmmaker Yulia Mahr. A rich portrait of a shared artistic process, Max Richter's Sleep shows a drive to alter the conventions of popular music and encourage listeners to engage in “quiet protest”.
“There’s something cleansing and therapeutic about this film…the fascinating insights never let up.” – Thomas Hobbs, Little White Lies
