A courageous teenage girl must care for her younger brother when their mother abandons them in the spirited British drama Rocks.
Shola (Bukky Bakray), known as Rocks to her friends, lives in a London council flat with her troubled mother and younger brother Emmanuel (D’angelou Osei Kissiedu). When suddenly left alone to care for Emmanuel, and fearful of being forcefully separated if discovered, Rocks and her brother effectively go on the run, fugitives from grownup authority. With the help of her energetic friends, Rocks begins an odyssey that will forge her resilience and define her life.
Far from being a piece of miserablist filmmaking, Rocks is a supremely entertaining and joyous film that celebrates friendship, endeavour and the spirit of girlhood. Uniquely crafted by a majority female creative team in collaboration with mostly first-time actors from differing cultural backgrounds, Rocks might well be the film that defines a generation.
“The East London-set drama boasts wit, a dynamic cast and a piercing sadness...an energetic five-star triumph.” - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
