In a small city on the Nile Delta, 19 year old Souad (Bassant Ahmed) leads a double life. Conservative and veiled in public, online she obsesses over her appearance and embarks on secret virtual romances.
Pulled between the pressures of conservative society and the freedoms she can find online, Souad lies to her elders about her dull and dutiful reality, as she dreams of a very different lifestyle with her ‘boyfriend’ Ahmed. But when her ambitions are slowly crushed by the invasion of reality, it is Rabab, her 13-year-old little sister, who embarks on a journey into her sister’s virtual world looking for answers.
A favourite at Cannes, Berlin and Tribeca, Souad acutely examines the contradictions of teenage life in contemporary Egypt and the challenges of combining traditional values with social media and features astonishing performances from a cast of non-professionals.
The screening on Sat 11 Sept will be followed by a recorded a 25 minute Q&A between director, Ayten Amin, and curator of the BFI Season ‘The Time is New: Selections from Contemporary Arab Cinema’, Alia Ayman.
