The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner is Werner Herzog’s moving portrait of a record-breaking ski jumper.

The truly stunning, soaring ski-flights of Walter Steiner, a man who earns his living as a carpenter, are beautifully captured using a 16mm camera running at several times its usual speed.

Steiner breaks record after record but goes into a difficult internal struggle when one jump goes badly wrong. Kosmiche music legends Popul Vuh draw out and illustrate the beauty and drama.

The 7.00pm screening on Wed 10 Apr will be introduced by Dr. Des O'Rawe, senior lecturer in Film Studies at Queen's University. Presented in partnership with The Centre for Documentary Research at Queen's.

From 29 March to 18 April, Visions of Europe returns to celebrate the breadth of European cinema. With a handpicked selection of films, we take in the best of European film including previews, festival hits and classics returning to the big screen. This year, all Visions of Europe screenings are Pay What You Can, find out more.
