Canada's entry for Best International Feature Film at the 2022 Oscars, Drunken Birds is a complex look at the relationship between the exploiters and the exploited on a farm in Quebec.

When Willy, an employee of a powerful drug lord in Mexico, falls in love with his boss's wife, Marlena, the lovers flee separately in the hopes of finding each other in a safer place. Willy suspects that Marlena is hiding in Montreal, so he escapes to Quebec where he is hired as a seasonal worker at the Bécotte Farm. While friendships are being forged between the foreign workers on the farm, the Bécotte family begins to disintegrate. When Willy is accused by one Bécotte family member of a crime he did not commit, it sends a ripple effect through the lives of all, for better or for worse.

Featuring beautiful cinematography and moments of magical realism, Drunken Birds highlights the tensions that swell amidst the long days of labour.

"Drunken Birds puts audiences in a direct encounter with the Canada we often choose not to see." - Pat Mullen, That Shelf

Screening in partnership with the High Commission of Canada in the United Kingdom, and Telefilm Canada, this season of films explores aspects of Canadian society rarely seen on the big screen.
