After years of only a single 35mm print available for screenings, Pat O'Connor's daring and provocative Irish drama has been remastered in 2K. Ripe for rediscovery, it remains as shocking, audacious, and intimate as ever.
Based on Bernard MacLaverty's award-winnning novel, this Troubles-set love story follows Cal (John Lynch), a young man on the fringes of the IRA, who falls in love with Marcella (Helen Mirren, who won the Best Actress prize at Cannes for her performance), the widow of a police officer he helped murder in an IRA attack one year earlier.
Produced by David Puttnam and directed by Pat O'Connor, Cal features a haunting, atmospheric score by Mark Knopfler. A huge success at QFT upon release in 1984, Cal returns to our screens courtesy of Warner Bros. and Park Circus, with support from Northern Ireland Screen.
Join us for a special preview screening of the remastered Cal on Fri 6 June at 6.30pm, when we will be joined by writer Bernard MacLaverty.
All screenings of Cal will include a newly recorded introduction by Dame Helen Mirren.
