A taciturn loner and a Chinese immigrant scheme to steal milk from a wealthy landowner’s prized Jersey cow in Kelly Reichardt's (Certain Women; Showing Up) western drama First Cow. Chosen by our LUMI Programmers for Earth Day.
In 1820s Oregon, slippery adventurer Cookie Figowitz (John Magaro) is hired as a cook for a trapping party. However, when his incompetence becomes too much, he splits with the group and sets out on the trail, seeking his fortune. On his way he meets itinerant Chinese worker King Lu (Orion Lee), a man who shares Cookie's dream of striking it rich. When Lu tells Cookie about a cow that has arrived in the territory - the first of its kind - the two hatch a bold plan to secretly milk the cow and use the precious liquid to make delicious and lucrative buttermilk scones.
A sublime modern masterpiece from one of cinema's most interesting filmmakers, First Cow is a sumptuous tale of male friendship, pilfered dairy and the pursuit of the American dream.
