Talk: From Battleship Potemkin to Last Tango in Paris: Film Censorship in Northern Ireland
This talk will explore the controversies faced by particular films within Northern Ireland.
Drawing on a range of film examples and using material from PRONI, this talk will examine how different local authorities determined whether particular films could be shown. From troublesome politics, to deviant sexual behaviour, overt sexuality and challenging representations, the way in which film is evaluated, considered and censored, reveals a great deal about local concerns and preoccupations.
Dr Sian Barber is a Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at Queen's University Belfast.
