Star-crossed lovers Lula (Dern) and Sailor (Cage) are pursued across the American landscape by all manner of horrors. Most of which are unleashed by Lula's unhinged mother (Diane Ladd), a woman scorned who will stop at nothing to destroy Sailor.

Rather than deliver a juicy, pulpy crime story, Lynch offers up a sun-bleached, heavy metal twist on The Wizard of Oz, complete with witches, yellow brick roads and the clicking heels of ruby slippers.

Also starring Harry Dean Stanton, Isabella Rossellini, and Willem Dafoe, and featuring a haunting score by Angelo Badalamenti.
