#WeAreQFT: Louise Gallagher
27 April 2020
This edition of #WeAreQFT focuses on film producer Louise Gallagher. She tells us her five lockdown films, which Mexican wrestling comedy is her guilty pleasure, and what musical made for a great remake.
You are stuck at home and your favourite cinema is closed. What five films do you watch?
Blazing Saddles (1974)
Withnail & I (1987)
Dangerous Liaisons (1988)
Sideways (2004)
Flawless (1999)
What three words would you use to describe QFT?
Essential, comfy, escape.
What is your earliest cinema-going memory?
Going to see Superman in the Strand Cinema in Derry, with my family about 1978. It was magical!
What film do you dislike that everyone else loves?
Lady Bird (2017). Sorry!
What is your guilty pleasure film?
Nacho Libre (2006).
What is your favourite film soundtrack?
The Rose (1979).
What is the best thing about going to the cinema?
Not being asked to pause it while someone goes to the loo!
Do you have a special place in the cinema where you always sit?
In the middle of the back row or 2nd from back row.
Who is your favourite film villain?
Hedley Lamarr in Blazing Saddles.
What one thing would you change about your favourite film?
Nothing. It’s my favourite because it’s perfect the way it is.
What film do you think justifies a remake?
If the message of a film is timeless and can be used in a positive way for a new audience, then I’m all for that. The remake of Hairspray (2007) is a great example.
Have you ever changed your opinion on a film? What one?
Lady Bird.
What is your favourite movie quote?
“Excuse me while I whip this out” (Blazing Saddles) and “We’ve gone on holiday by mistake” (Withnail & I).
What film would you love to see at QFT when it reopens?
I’m going to pick two. The Rose or Blazing Saddles. I’ve never seen either on the big screen, and I’ve fond memories of watching them on the TV with my family when growing up in Derry.
Who would play you in a film of your life?
Errr..catch yourself on!
