Season BFI Black Star

Join us in celebrating some of cinema’s greatest talents in Black Star, a major new season from the BFI, continuing until December.

Soldier, jazz musician, butler, samurai hitman, burglar, undertaker, ruthless dictator. These seven films demonstrate the versatility of Forest Whitaker, one of the finest – and most unassuming – actors working in cinema today. All films (except Bird) are screening from 35mm prints.

Bill Duke directs this stylish and fast-moving film adaptation of Chester Himes' crime novel.

When a beautiful seductress from Mississippi (Robin Givens) arrives in Harlem with a fortune in gold, everyone wants a piece of it. Everyone, that is, except Jackson (Forest Whitaker), a quiet naive man. When he crosses paths with this sexy con artist, he unexpectedly enters a world of greed and decadence where nothing is as it seems.

Also screening as part of BFI Black Star: All About Forest Season:

The Crying Game

Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai

Bird

The Butler

Panic Room

The Last King of Scotland
