Join us in celebrating some of cinema’s greatest talents in Black Star, a major new season from the BFI, continuing until December.
Soldier, jazz musician, butler, samurai hitman, burglar, undertaker, ruthless dictator. These seven films demonstrate the versatility of Forest Whitaker, one of the finest – and most unassuming – actors working in cinema today. All films (except Bird) are screening from 35mm prints.
Jim Jarmusch's blackly comic mix of samurai ways and mafia wise guys is in a genre of its own.
This surreal and stylish fable stars Forest Whitaker as a self-taught samurai hitman who finds himself marked for death by the mafia. Blessed with stunning cinematography from Robby Müller and a brilliant original score from Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA (who also cameos), this is an intoxicating and strangely moving fusion of gangsta, gangster and ninja worlds.
