Join us in celebrating some of cinema’s greatest talents in Black Star, a major new season from the BFI, continuing until December.
Soldier, jazz musician, butler, samurai hitman, burglar, undertaker, ruthless dictator. These seven films demonstrate the versatility of Forest Whitaker, one of the finest – and most unassuming – actors working in cinema today. All films (except Bird) are screening from 35mm prints.
Forest Whitaker won the Best Actor Oscar for his towering performance as charismatic Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in Kevin Macdonald's powerful and unsettling drama.
The story follows newly qualified Scottish doctor Garrigan (James McAvoy) who chooses to work in Africa rather than join his father's practice. Arriving in Uganda following a military coup, he finds himself treating the country's volatile new leader Idi Amin after a car crash. Offered a job as Amin's personal physician, Garrigan accepts, unaware that the position comes with horrific downsides.
