To celebrate QFT's 50th Birthday and our 18 year working relationship, Belfast Film Festival and QFT present an all-night 'midnight movie' event, from dusk ‘til dawn. This is your chance to stay up all night, eat badly and have your head fried…

THE HOLY MOUNTAIN

The follow-up to his midnight movie sensation El Topo, writer-director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s The Holy Mountain caused a scandal at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival with its flood of sacrilegious imagery, existential symbolism and outrageous violence. One of the most extraordinary movies ever made, this is a hypnotising, unsettling, transgressive, dazzling, decadent, rambling, psychedelic masterpiece!

DIR: ALEJANDRO JODOROWSKY • 1973 • MEXICO/USA • 2 HRS 4 MINS • PARTIALLY SUBTITLED

TOBY DAMMIT

Federico Fellini's film, made in 1968 in various locations throughout Rome, is a short surreal masterpiece. Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's short story Never Bet the Devil Your Head, and starring Terrence Stamp, it originally appeared as a segment in the omnibus film Spirits of the Dead. Toby Dammit is “8 1/2 goes to hell.”

DIR: FEDERICO FELLINI • 1968 • FRANCE/ITALY • 37 MINS • PARTIALLY SUBTITLED

MESSIAH OF EVIL

You may not be familiar with Messiah of Evil, but the mind-blowing production design and eerie direction make it an absolute must-see. Think Carnival of Souls meets H.P. Lovecraft meets Night of the Living Dead, topped off with a nod from the psychedelic early seventies. A young woman goes searching for her missing artist father. Her journey takes her to a strange Californian seaside town governed by a mysterious undead cult.

DIR: GLORIA KATZ & WILLARD HUYCK • 1973 • USA • 1 HR 33 MINS

HOUSE (HAUSU)

A schoolgirl travels with six classmates to her ailing aunt's creaky country home and comes face-to-face with evil spirits, a demonic house cat, a bloodthirsty piano, and other ghoulish visions. An unforgettable mixture of bubblegum teen melodrama and grisly phantasmagoria, Nobuhiko Ôbayashi’s deranged fairy tale House is one of Japanese cinema's wildest supernatural ventures and a truly startling debut feature.

DIR: NOBUHIKO OBAYASHI • 1977 • JAPAN • 1 HR 28 MINS • SUBTITLED

DEEP RED (PROFONDO ROSSO)

From Dario Argento, maestro of the macabre and the man behind some the greatest excursions in Italian horror (Suspiria), comes Deep Red – arguably the ultimate giallo movie. One night, musician Marcus Daly (David Hemmings), looking up from the street below, witnesses the brutal axe murder of a woman in her apartment. As he takes on the role of amateur sleuth, Marcus finds himself ensnared in a bizarre web of murder and mystery where nothing is what it seems…

DIR: DARIO ARGENTO • 1975 • ITALY • 2 HRS 6 MINS • CERT 18
