The follow-up to his midnight movie sensation El Topo, writer-director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s The Holy Mountain caused a scandal at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival with its flood of sacrilegious imagery, existential symbolism and outrageous violence. TOBY DAMMIT

Federico Fellini's film, made in 1968 in various locations throughout Rome, is a short surreal masterpiece. Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's short story Never Bet the Devil Your Head, and starring Terrence Stamp, it originally appeared as a segment in the omnibus film Spirits of the Dead. Toby Dammit is “8 1/2 goes to hell.”

MESSIAH OF EVIL
